Oral Fluid Testing
The main advantage of oral fluid (saliva) testing is that it can detect various groups of drugs within a few hours after consumption or use. Saliva testing has a window of detection of up to around 2 days (depending on the drug group and the level of usage).
This makes oral fluid testing an ideal option for
detecting recent drug use or for post accident testing.
Main Advantages in Oral Fluid Testing:
-
Ideal for busy and active construction sites.
-
Our oral fluid screening can detect the following drug groups: THC (Cannabis), Cocaine, Opiates, Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Oxycodone, Benzodiazepines.
-
Quick results. A turnaround of around 15 mins per test for negative results. Minimal workplace disruption.
-
Oral fluid testing is less "invasive" compared to urine testing.
-
Oral Fluid testing is more widely favoured by unions for random screening purposes.
-
Difficult to adulterate (cheat) as the test is undertaken face to face.
-
Saliva is readily available for collection whereas Urine can be difficult for the donor to pass if the bladder is not full or the donor has health issues.
Urine Testing
The main advantage of urine testing is its sensitivity and detection window. Urine testing can detect groups of drugs from around 4 hours up to around 14 days. (depending on the drug group and the level of usage). Urine screening covers the following drug groups: THC (Cannabis), Cocaine, Opiates, Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Benzodiazepines.
Urine tests are mostly commonly used for pre employment, concerning employee conduct, contractor inductions or site requirements, critical safety roles, family law or criminal law requirements.
Considerations with Urine Testing:
-
Urine's lengthy detection window can detect recreational use. It can highlight an individual's drug use, however it cannot determine whether or not that person is 'currently under the influence' at the time the urine sample was taken.
-
Urine testing at work can be used as a means of deterring employee drug use given its lengthy detection window. As a consequence this can assist in improving employee productivity and workplace safety by employees reducing their recreational drug use.
-
Urine screening is a good testing option for pre-employment, induction courses or those who may have previously confirmed positive to an illicit substance for retesting purposes.
-
Compared to oral fluid testing, urine testing requires more on site coordination such as a dedicated toilet close to where the testing is being conducted. A donor may not be able to provide a sample when required which may add extra time & cost to the testing process.
Alcohol Testing
We utilise high quality, high spec hand held alcohol breath testing devices that meet Australian Standards AS3547 - 2019. The same technology that the NSW Police Force use. Our hand held alcohol testing devices are used in heavy use commercial applications and provide quick and accurate results.
Drug & Alcohol Policy Creation
Does your company wish to undertake Drug & Alcohol testing in the workplace? If so then you are required to implement a drug & alcohol policy. This policy spells out the guidelines for managing the misuse of Drugs & Alcohol in the workplace. Policies include a range of initiatives customised for each individual workplace.
Laboratory Confirmation Testing
On site drug screening is a quick and efficient workplace screening mechanism. In clinical terms this type of test is referred to as 'immunoassay test'. The aim of the test is to quickly 'screen' a donor against a number of drug groups.
If we detect drugs during a workplace screening, the person's result is referred to as a 'non negative' or an 'unconfirmed result'.
For an unconfirmed result, a sample of their oral fluid or urine is obtained, securely sealed for laboratory confirmation testing.
Laboratory confirmation testing employs a different type of technology. A process called 'Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry' (LCMS) is used to analyse the oral fluid or urine sample collected which is the most sophisticated and accurate method available. The laboratory will be able to confirm the presence of a drug and pinpoint specifically what triggered the positive result. For example a donor may be taking over counter pain medication containing codeine and have a positive screening result for the drug group 'opiates'.
Confirmation laboratory testing will confirm the presence of drugs detected during the screening and will provide either a positive or negative result. As such, only laboratory confirmation results can only be used as evidence.
